For the last two weeks the warehouse automation headlines have been about scale: Unitree’s $9 billion humanoid IPO, Brain Corp crossing 50,000 AMRs, Multiway’s 5,000-location Malaysian deployment. This week the news is about something quieter — and more consequential. The vendors who will shape the next decade are not selling more robots. They are building the intelligence layer that every robot, scanner, and human process will route through.
What changed in the second week of August
1. Google DeepMind is building the “intelligence layer” for physical AI. Logistics Viewpoints (Aug 3) reported that DeepMind’s strategy — including the Gemini Robotics 2 release on July 30 — is to position itself as the decision-making substrate that every physical-AI vendor plugs into. The pitch is not a robot; it is the brain that coordinates them.
2. NVIDIA signed seven Japanese industrial giants into a Cosmos physical-AI coalition (NVIDIA Newsroom, July 15; CNBC, July 16). Yahoo Finance tallied related demand disclosures at roughly $1 trillion. The participating manufacturers — Yaskawa, Fanuc, Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi, and others — are committing to build their next-generation robotics on NVIDIA’s Cosmos platform, which provides world-model training and simulation. The platform is the moat, not the hardware.
3. IDC found that 88% of supply chain organisations have deployed AI, but only 12% have governance in place (Tech Times, Aug 13). The “deployed but not governed” gap is the binding constraint — and it is exactly what B2B procurement teams should be asking vendors about.
